Summer of ART

THANK YOU to everyone who supported our First Annual Summer of ART!

With your help, we were able to recognize and thank all the bead artists, bead bag stitchers and woodturners who support our mission, while raising much-needed funds for Beads of Courage Arts-in-Medicine programs.

If you missed the Summer of ART but would still like to make a donation, please visit our Donation Page or Courage Keepers page. Thank you for helping make healing happen!

From June through September, we are shining a spotlight on four amazing communities of volunteer artists and crafters who support our mission year-round with their beautiful donated goods. The handcrafted beads, bags and bowls they donate strengthen our arts-in-medicine mission and bring beauty to the bedside of kids coping with serious illness.

Why Support the Summer of ART?

The flagship Beads of Courage Program helps children coping with serious illness by giving them a visible and tangible way to tell their stories of courage. Every bead provides an opportunity for courage to be honored, hope to be given, and joy to be experienced. Given at the bedside, Beads of Courage are spirit-lifting, which can be lifesaving in the moment.

At Beads of Courage, we rely on the generosity of thousands of caring bead artists who donate handcrafted glass and polymer beads that are given to children for specific treatment milestones. We are also fortunate to have the support of many dedicated stitchers and woodturners who provide bead bags and bowl so children have a beautiful way to keep and carry their beads.

Your monetary donation to the Summer of ART sends a strong message to the children we support that they are not alone in their fight for life.

Featured Art Groups

Woodturners – Woodturning is the art and craft of creating shaped objects on a lathe. Becoming an accomplished woodturner requires practice and a deep knowledge of the properties of many different kinds of woods. Woodturners across the country donate one-of-a-kind lidded bowls and boxes that serve as sacred vessels for the many beads BOC members receive during treatment.

Bead Bag Stitchers – Individual stitchers and quilting groups create thousands of beautiful fabric bags every year that are given to BOC members to contain the beads they receive during treatment. These generous volunteers share their gift of sewing with us by providing colorful bead bags that bring joy to Beads of Courage members worldwide.

Polymer Clay Bead Artists – Skilled polymer clay artists create handmade beads that are packaged with love and given to Beads of Courage members to represent milestones during treatment, including hospital discharge day. These colorful and fun beads are used in every Beads of Courage program.

Lampwork Bead Artists – Talented bead artists create glass beads over an open flame that lift the spirits and honor the courage of kids coping with serious illness. These Act of Courage beads are given to acknowledge the bravery of children at treatment-defining moments. Each bead is a miniature work of art that serves as a medal of courage in a child’s fight for life.
